After more than four decades on the political stage and over one and a half decades of authoritarian rule, Sheikh Hasina has now been sentenced to death following her ouster in the July uprising. She is the first among those who have served as the head of state or government in Bangladesh to be convicted of crimes against humanity.
On Monday, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death after finding her guilty in a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July Movement. Her Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan, was also given the death penalty. Former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received a five-year prison sentence.
The verdict was delivered in the absence of 78-year-old Sheikh Hasina. After being removed from power in the uprising, she left the country on 5 August last year and took refuge in India, where she still resides. As she is absconding, prosecutors of the tribunal have said she will not be eligible to appeal the verdict.
